Onshore Based Operational Support
Prosafe Engineering can provide a dedicated team to support all offshore pipeline operations, including management of maintenance and inspection programs, pipeline and facility upgrades and well as providing logistical, procurement and admin support.
This facility can be particularly advantageous to help manage a multitude of smaller, ongoing packages of work offshore, which would not warrant a full individual project team. One key benefit to this approach is the minimal resource required by the operator to manage third party interfaces.
Gap analysis of existing IM systems and procedures
Prosafe Engineering can offer a thorough peer review of existing integrity management systems, processes and Procedures. A Gap Analysis study will help identify any non-conformances with industry regulations, highlight where current processes are in compliance but short of industry best practices and assurance where industry best practices are being satisfied.
The results of the gap analysis are reported using a traffic light system to allow the operator to easily identify areas within the system that require immediate attention and can also be referenced for monitored improvement plans.
Preparation of Pipeline Integrity Management Systems (PIMS)
An effective PIMS will address all plausible pipeline integrity threats and provide details of counter measures required to prevent any potential hazard or event from being realised.
Prosafe Engineering is able to use the results of gap analysis projects to formulate a comprehensive PIMS to meet the requirements of recognised codes and accepted industry best practices.
Preparation of Major Accident Prevention Documents (MAPD)
The Pipeline Safety Regulations 1996 requires an operator to produce an MAPD for all of its pipeline systems. The MAPD is a management tool that will ensure the operator is aware of the risk from major accidents and has an appropriate management system in place to ensure control of these risks. Prosafe Engineering offers the preparation of the MAPD as an additional service to their risk and reliability services as detailed in the following section.
Risk and Reliability Management
The identification of integrity threats and assessment of their associated risks is fundamental to implementing a successful integrity management system. Prosafe Engineering has experience in the formulation of both qualitative and semi-quantitative risk assessments, which can be used to form the basis of risk based inspection (RBI) and reliability centered maintenance methodologies for pipeline and facilities systems.
Furthermore, Prosafe Engineering are able to design and implement effective pipeline and facilities risk management systems to provide the client with a means of managing known risks to their assets indefinitely. The use of a risk management system allows operators to understand the risks to their assets and allocate budgets effectively within a transparent, logical and consistent framework, avoiding the need for expenditure on non-critical projects.
Offshore Survey Support and Assessment of Survey Data
Prosafe Engineering can provide support for planning, implementation and assessment of offshore pipeline survey, including specification of inspection scopes and reporting requirements, offshore support during the subsea survey and subsequent assessment of survey results.
Prosafe Engineering can also provide engineering consultancy in-line with recognised codes, standards and industry best practice for the assessment.
All relevant inputs, including pipeline design specifications, installation, operation history and prevalent environmental conditions will be accounted for to determine the most appropriate assessment methods to use. These parameters will also be considered when recommending the most appropriate mitigation methods where action is considered necessary.
Corrosion Management Strategies and Procedures
Prosafe Engineering offers expertise and experience in the development of corrosion management strategies and procedures for high-pressure oil & gas pipelines to help achieve the required design life for a pipeline.
A review of existing corrosion control measures in conjunction with prevalent pipeline operating conditions and available ILI data can identify areas where current practices being implemented are insufficient. Based on a study of potential corrosion mechanisms, recommendations for additional or alternative control measures can be made based upon a combination of commercial and operational benefits or constraints.
Specialist Pipeline Pigging Support
Pigging support can relate to the development of effective routine pigging operations and procedures to optimise pipeline efficiency and avoid flow assurance issues, OR to the planning and execution of in-line inspection projects to feed into pipeline integrity assessments.
Routine pigging is an essential aspect of internal corrosion and flow assurance control. An effective routine pigging programme will reduce numerous internal corrosion risks and the risk of plugging due to the accumulation of wax or hydrate deposits.
Prosafe Engineering can develop routine pigging programmes (including the design of cleaning pigs and routine pigging scheduling), or review and assess existing routine pigging programmes, to maximise the benefits of routine pigging and provide recommendations for improvement where applicable.
Prosafe Engineering can provide full support for in-line inspection (ILI) projects from initial piggability studies to establish whether ILI is feasible, including prioritising pipeline inspections using risk based assessment techniques, through to providing offshore support during the execution phase of the project and subsequent pipeline integrity assessments.
Where conventional pigging is not considered to be a viable option, Prosafe Engineering is able to provide consultancy services and recommend solutions for the inspection of such pipelines by considering alternative inspection techniques such as riser inspection.
Pipeline Integrity Assessments
Prosafe Engineering adopts a holistic approach to pipeline integrity assessments to provide the client with a detailed evaluation of pipeline integrity, including an assessment of the pipeline’s ability to attain the intended design life based on all available pipeline data.
Where the client can provide sufficient data, a typical pipeline integrity assessment would consist of:
- An assessment of most recent ILI data to determine the severity of all reported pipeline anomalies in accordance with industry best practice or the client’s preferred assessment method
- An assessment of corrosion growth rates based on statistical analysis of historical ILI data and/or accepted corrosion models to predict future corrosion.
An assessment of active corrosion mechanisms based on pipeline operating conditions and patterns of corrosion
- An assessment on the remaining life of the pipeline under current or expected future operating conditions
- Recommendations for further inspection or investigation deemed necessary to assess potentially critical integrity issues
- Recommendations for remedial action considered necessary to attain the intended design lift of the pipeline, including provision of repair strategy to address critical integrity issues in order of priority
Where the requirement for repair is identified, Prosafe Engineering has the ability and resources to Project Manage the delivery of the preferred solution, from preparation of repair philosophy document and selection of sub-contractors through to installation.
Life Extension Studies
As aging offshore assets approach the end of their original design lift, the need to safely extend the life of the subsea assets is becoming increasingly common.
Prosafe Engineering’s pipeline integrity assessments can be extended to offer the client the capability to conduct detailed life cycle studies based on original design data and historical operational data. Asset condition and remnant life of subsea flow-lines and riser are reported with the intention of assessing the safety of the pipeline relative to the new operational life, as required by the operator.
Prosafe Engineering offer a tailored data management service to assist operators with all of their pipeline data, including a data storage facility for original design and as-built drawings, historical inspection reports, failure reports and a live system for management of pipeline / system anomalies.
An anomaly management system allows an operator to manage system anomalies by storing all anomalies in one central location. The operator is then able to interrogate the system to filter anomalies based on criticality, type, location etc. This facility can then be used to assist on-going inspection; maintenance and repair (IMR) strategies and can provide quick and easy to use summary reports for issuing pipeline integrity statements.

Statement of Integrity
Prosafe Engineering is able to prepare a statement of integrity on behalf of an operator, which details the status of each pipeline within a given field and provides justification for the continued safe operation of pipelines and associated subsea and topside infrastructure.
Prosafe Engineering uses a traffic light system to allow significant issues to be highlighted and referenced with ease. Planned inspection, maintenance and repair (IMR) activities for all pipelines are summarised within the document.
